The Little Things

'Let's go somewhere..  ' he said, his eyes alight with mystery.

'Where?' She cocked her head to one side.

'Come on!' He spoke with urgency.

She got up and followed him.

He walked briskly and she had to hurry to catch up with his long strides.

They arrived at the place. It was a stall by the roadside where casual Senegalese dresses were displayed. A woman sat in front of the stall.

'Good afternoon, Madam' he hailed her.

'Ah, good afternoon, Sir. Good afternoon, Ma' the lady greeted.

'Good afternoon, Ma'am' she smiled pleasantly.

'Did you keep it?' he asked the lady.

'Yes, I did' the lady said, standing up.

'Okay, good. She can try it on, right?' he looked excited.

'Yes Sir. Please, come in' the lady ushered her into the shop.

She threw a questioning look at him but he just smiled and motioned her to go in. He waited outside for her.

She went into the stall and the lady brought out a dress where she had kept it and handed it to her.

She removed her top and put on the dress. She felt the tears gathering in her eyes.

She sniffed audibly and the lady looked at her with concern.

'Are you okay? Don't you like it?'

'Oh no, I love it! I just didn't know he did this' she explained.

'Oh' the lady smiled.

'Is everything okay? What's she saying?' He called from outside.

'It's women's talk' the lady answered him.

She took off the dress and gave it to the lady who put it in a polythene bag and handed it back to her.

'Thank you very much, Ma'am' she said quietly.

'You are welcome' the lady smiled back and followed her out.

'Did it fit? Do you like it?' he asked, anxious.

'I love it' she answered.

'Great! How much, Madam?' he asked.

'Two thousand naira' the lady answered.

He handed the money to the lady, said thanks and taking her hand in his, he led her away from the stall.

'When did you do this?' She asked softly.

'When you said you were coming. I saw it and liked it and I thought it would look good on you so I asked her to keep it for me. And she did. Wonderful woman!' he said.

And she fell in love with him again.

The dress wasn't expensive but the gesture was.

She fell for him, for the umpteenth time.
